For all those out there that are wondering ‘What in the name of God is this’, sfintii are a traditional Romanian treat… and well this treat brings back sweet memories from my childhood!

I remember when my mother used to wake up and with such joy she would knead the dough to prepare this dish, while my sisters and I were intertwined between her legs, begging her to let us help at least a bit because we were all bakers of course… or so we thought! 🙂 And I remember that my boys used to do the same thing when they were small, but things changed … they are all grown up and they now only enjoy tasting my BakedTreats alongside a glass of wine with their father.

Anyway these are merely sweet memories, so let’s start baking!  

 

Preparing time: 15min

Baking time: 25min

Difficulty: Medium

Ingredients:

Dough: flour, 3 spoons of sugar, 250ml warm milk, 1 egg, 1 spoon dried yeast, salt sugar, rom essence, 80ml oil, 1 spoon lemon skin, 1 egg yolk.

For decoration: 3 sugar spoons, 300ml water, rom essence, 100gr honey, 200gr grinded nut.

Preparation:

Put the sieved flour into a bowl add the warm milk slowly and then one by one, the egg, all the spices, the dried yeast and finally the oil. After, you can leave this mix in a warm place until it rises. I usually leave it around one hour.

When this is done, you can form small dough balls, around the size of a fist and then shape them into the plat shape shown below. To obtain this, you simply roll the dough into a long strand; bend this strand in order to double it up, then simply just twist that doubled strand and after connect it, in order to form a circle. When the circle is formed all you do is twist this in two to form that infinity sort of shape. I’m not sure how explicit that was so please find the images attached below. 🙂

You can now bake them, so make sure you prepare the baking tray with baking paper. Leave them in for around 30min to rise a bit and then take them out so you can grease them up with the egg yolk. Leave in the oven for a further 25-30min at 180”C. And voilà:

While you wait for them to chill, you can start preparing the sauce you will use as the top layer. All you need to do for this is boil water and sugar together, until the sugar dissolves. Add the rom essence and your sauce is complete.

When the ‘sfinti’ are chilled but still slightly warm, cover them in the sauce you’ve created earlier, smear them with a bit of honey and sprinkle the grinded nuts on top. Below is the final result, hope you all enjoy them 🙂

  Sfinti….ziua aceasta imi aduce aminte de copilarie cind mami se trezea de dimineata si framinta cu drag aluatul pentru sfinti si noi toate eram printre picioarele ei si o zapaceam de cap sa ne dea si noua o bucatica de aluat sa facem si noi, ca de..cica eram gospodine…:) Cam asa faceau si baietii mei cind erau mici, si tare imi erau dragi…acu insa le place doar sa ai savureze linga paharelul cu vin alaturi de tatal lor drag….Da daa..chiar asa… baietii mei acum sunt majori, 19 si 21 ani…:)

    Timp de pregatire: 15 min

    Timp de coacere: 25 min

    Dificultate: medie

    Ingrediente:

  • 500 gr faina
  • 3 linguri zahar
  • 250 ml lapte caldut
  • un ou
  • o lingurita drojdie uscata
  • un praf de sare
  • esenta de rom
  • 80 ml ulei
  • o lingurita coaja de lamaie
  • un galbenus pentru uns

Pentru decor:

  • 3 linguri zahar
  • 300 ml apa
  • esenta de rom
  • 100 gr miere de albine
  • 200 gr nuca macinata

Framintam aluatul din ingredientele date, adica punem faina cernuta intr-un bol mare, facem un crater la mijloc unde adaugam laptele caldut, oul, mirodeniile, drojdia si uleiul. Framintam aluatul aproximativ 5 minute si lasam la loc caldut si ferit de curet sa creasca. Eu il fac si il las cam o ora la crescut…

Dupa ce a crescut frumos impartim aluatul in bilute cit sa intre in pumn si apoi modelam colaceii ca in imagine, adica facem un sul lung, il punem in doua si il rasucim si apoi il rasucim iar formind colacelul….nu stiu cit am fost de explicita, tocmai de aia am ales sa va atasez pozicile..:)

Ai punem in tava tapetata cu hartie de copt si ai lasam sa creasca o jumatate de or[, apoi ai ungem cu galbenus de ou si ai dam la cuptor pentru 20-25 minute la 180`C in cuptorul incins in prealabil. Rezultatul…..

Pina se racesc un pic pregatim pentru decor, siropul care se face foarte simplu din apa cu zahar care se fierbe pina se dizolva zaharul si dupa ce luam de pe foc adaugam esenta de rom, pregatim mierea de albine si nuca macinata..

Cind sfintii sunt doar un pic calduti ai tavalim in sirop apoi ai ungem cu miere de albine si dupa presuram nuca deasupra….Intr-un final….vor arata cam asa..
